Sure, Sugar's Sweet, But How Safe Is It?

The sugar industry advertises sugar as safe, natural and low in calories. Faced with the claims, we have to ask if they simply sugarcoat reality?

The answer is yes and no.

A teaspoon of sugar contains only 16 calories, so using a little sugar in your coffee or tea, having an occasional sugary treat like a candy bar is not going to make you fat or harm your health.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, sugar does not cause hyperactivity, cancer or most other health problems. Still, beware of eating a lot of sugar. Large amounts of sugar can cause tooth decay and increase your waistline.

For example, a 12-ounce can of pop contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar. That sugar produces 160 calories but no vitamins or minerals.

Sugary foods like chocolate often contain fat which can damage your heart as well as your waistline.

Bottom line: You can enjoy sugar, but only in moderation.
