PhotoPet food maker Nestle Purina now faces a class-action suit by pet owners in eight states who say the company's jerky treats killed or sickened their pets.

Yet the product remains on store shelves and NBC News reports the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is unable to pinpoint a contaminant that could be causing the problem.

The original lawsuit was filed back in April by an Illinois pet owner. Six other pet owners have now joined it and are also suing the retail stores that carry the product, Walmart, Costco and Target.

Complaints

Consumers writing to ConsumerAffairs continue to report adverse results when they feed Waggin' Train treats to their pets.

“I began to notice things just weren't right with her,” Dennis, of Bellport, NY, wrote about his pug in a ConsumerAffairs post. “She had become lethargic, had loose bowel movements, and seemed to drink a lot more water than usual. When she started to not want to eat her food, I knew something was wrong. I cook everything she eats, and give her no store bought dog food, so the Wagg'n Train treats were the only thing she was given besides freshly prepared foods.”

Steve, of Franklin Park, NJ, reports he had purchased Waggin' Treats for years and that his dogs loved them. But last month, his Westie suddenly got sick after eating them and died.

“My regular vet ran several logical tests – but came up clueless as to what was causing his lethargy, lack of eating, and vomiting,” Steve wrote. “He thought it was colitis – so we tried antibiotics. That made my “Max” feel no better – even worse. He was then tested for Addison’s Disease. Nope – that was not it, as well.”

Common link?

Both Steve and Dennis noted that they prepared their dog's food themselves, which might suggest the animals has particularly sensitive digestive systems. Whether that's a possible contributing factor is unknown.

Since last November the FDA has been cautioning pet owners about chicken jerky products for dogs. The FDA notes that it has seen an increase in the number of complaints about the products, but as yet it does not know why.

“FDA is advising consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken jerky products to watch their dogs closely for any or all of the following signs that may occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water consumption and/or increased urination,” the FDA says on its site. “If the dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding the chicken jerky product. Owners should consult their veterinarian if signs are severe or persist for more than 24 hours.”

The FDA says the illnesses may not be associated with the jerky treats and that it continues to investigate the origin of the animals' sickness.

A wise idea is to always check where the food product has been produced. Buy products only made in the U.S, Canada and western Europe where purity of the food is much more closely observed. Everyone should return all Purina pet foods to the store where they purchased it.

Ive been feeding these exact chicken treats to my 4 dogs for the past 13 years. Not one single problem. If you open the bag and they smell like "roasted corn" they are perfectly fine, in my, and my dogs, opinion.

Thousands of dogs have gotten sick OR DIED. ALL of them ate chicken jerky from China. What do you suppose the odds are that this is a coincidence? Healthy dogs. Young dogs. Dogs that ate all their regular food with no problems. Dogs that were just fine until eating the freaking chicken jerky. And then they all came down with the exact same symtoms to varying degrees. Dogs don't get sick and die for no reason. That is just not feasible. The ONLY explanation is there is SOMETHING going on with the chicken jerky. Someday we will know what it is. Some kind of adverse interaction with the ingredients, processing, packaging, preserving or combination thereof. In the meantime, anyone who takes a chance with their dog's health and life is risking the pain that so many dogs and their owners have already experienced.

Ok so my opinion on this is a little mixed. I have also been giving my beloved pets these chicken jerkys for several years now, but a couple of months ago I bought a bag and upon opening it didn't smell like the rest nor look like the rest from Walmart. The jerkys had sort of a yellow dried out tinge look to them and smelled like bleach. As soon as I opened the bag I could smell a huge difference so I took them back to Walmart for a refund. Since then I have noticed that there have been several bags that look that way and I won't buy them. If they don't have that bright red fresh color then I recommend staying clear of them. I don't know if they are old, stale, or what but I won't feed my baby that. Pay close attention to what you buy.

My dog had been eating Waggin' Train chicken strips for four years and now has an unknown intestinal disease which started with vomiting and uncontrolled diahhrea. The only thing that helps his diahhrea is metronidizole(flagyl). Today, after an ultrasound, we discovered cavity masses in his spleen (don't know if it's related). If anyone discovers a cure for symptoms caused by the chicken strips from China I would be indebted to them.

Me too, a pack of 11 dogs, fed the occasional chicken jerky bought at Costco.. FOR YEARS.. I bought the big bags for obvious reason until I one day purchased it and 5 of my 11 dogs got instantly sick.. 2 had to go into vets and 1 has now permanent kidney damage.. BEWARE! DO not buy this junk for your dogs...

I agree with some of the other comments - there are much better, healthier treats to feed your dogs than these so-called treats. I choose to buy American-made products whenever I can for my dogs and myself! Unfortunately, many companies did not learn from the 2007 dog food recall. Please be careful what you feed your pets!

China said they were going to destroy us and they are doing it. Not too long ago just about everything coming from china was poisioned, drywall, toys, other brands of dog food that had a deadly chemical in it. Actually, we are helping china, we buy china made products constamtly and there seems to be no end to it. Every dollar we spend on china products buys bullets to kill Americans. They have about 20 million soldiers and 50 million children of different ages in uniform training to kill us, full military training. What do we have? Over 500 politicians who don't give a damn about anything but money and power... To hell with learning Spanish, the survivors will have to learn chinese....

They cook their dogs food not due to a sensitivity but because they don't trust the FDA to control what goes into pet food. Both of my dogs became sick from Waggin Train and eventually passed. Over 2k dogs have been sickened by products that fail to disclose they are made up of products that come from China even though they are distributed by companies in the US which they make sure is proudly displayed on their packages. Wake up America. You may be paying less for the products but in the end you are paying for it at the vets office where you may end not being able to save your dog because it will be too late for them.

Don't feed it to them. Its not worth the risk to your dog.
