Paul McCartney and some other old guys who used to have a band once asked whether they were still be loved and needed when they were 64.
Sir Paul, now well past 64, has apparently stopped worrying about love, decreeing that his fans will no longer enjoy his ancient recordings via such new-fangled streaming services as Spotify, Rdio and MOG.
McCartney, whose net worth has been estimated at $800 million, may feel he needs to save more money for his declining years, or he may simply be feeling grumpy. Hey, it happens.
Besides, we know from his work that Sir Paul doesn't care too much for money. Money can't buy you love, after all.
Digital Music News reported earlier this week that Concord Music, which handled McCartney's back catalog, had requested that all of McCartney's solo and Wings titles be pulled from Spotify.
Spotify later pointed out that McCartney had pulled most of his material in 2010, except for a few tunes licensed through other compilations.
McCartney's pullback apparently doesn't affect download services like iTunes and Amazon. So there's speculation that McCartney doesn't mind you listening to his music as long as you pay for it. Of course, subscribers to Spotify and other streaming services do pay a subscription fee but the artist's cut apparently isn't to Sir Paul's liking.
It's not just the geriatric set that's given a cold shoulder to streaming services. Coldplay has also frozen out the streamers, as have Adele, The Black Keys and Tom Waits, among others.
But don't take it personally. All that stuff about peace and love, well, it's just business, you know.
