J.C. Penney Refuses to Fire Ellen DeGeneres

Turns aside complaints from anti-gay hate group which demanded her ouster

PhotoJ.C. Penney has refused to fire Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson, turning aside demands from an anti-gay hate group, OneMillionMoms.com, which objected to the choice of Ms. DeGeneres.

In an emailed statement yesterday, J.C. Penney said it "stands behind its partnership with Ellen DeGeneres.”

“This week Americans spoke out in overwhelming support of LGBT people and J.C. Penney’s decision not to fire Ellen simply for who she happens to love,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs and Communications at GLAAD, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization.

A ConsumerAffairs.com sentiment analysis of about 200,000 consumer comments on social media confirmed DeGeneres' popularity, with a net positive sentiment in the 70%-90% range over the last year.

“But while Ellen has the nation on her side, in 29 states today, Americans can still be legally fired just for being gay," Graddick said. "Our elected officials should use this incident as yet another example of the support for legal protections for all hard working employees.”

Today, Americans can be fired in 29 states because of their sexual orientation, and in 34 states because of their gender identity.

Anti-gay group

OneMillionMoms.com is a project of the American Family Association, which has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

"Degeneres is not a true representation of the type of families who shop at the retailer. The small percentage of customers they are attempting to satisfy will not offset their loss in sales by offending the majority," the group said on its Web site. "Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of its customers are traditional families."

A poll on the Los Angeles Times site shows 94% of readers polled agree that DeGeners should not only maintain her post as J.C. Penney’s spokesperson, but call her “a symbol of equality.”

"Ellen DeGeneres is one of the most fun and vibrant people in entertainment today, with great warmth and a down-to-earth attitude. The millions who watch her on television and follow her through social media relate to her and trust what she has to say," said Michael Francis, president of J. C. Penney Company, Inc., as he announced her appointment last week.

"Importantly, we share the same fundamental values as Ellen," Francis said. "We couldn't think of a better partner to help us put the fun back into the retail experience."

Jolly Jim (Sat, 04 Feb 2012 23:29:12 +0000): Too bad a mildly good looking female is a dyke.
Lydia Lilli (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 22:29:30 +0000): And too bad Jolly Jim you're such a loser that your profile picture is of a dog.
Roger Bradley (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 22:48:19 +0000): Lydia Lilli Jolly has a bad case of testosterone poisoning and doesn't even know what that is.
Susan Fosdick (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 05:09:22 +0000): Too bad you are not.
Sheree Smith (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 11:54:42 +0000): Sorry but I can think of some much more vibrant people than Ellen,,, such as Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman,,,, etc,,, what is this a way to get lesbians in....No more shopping at JC Penneys for me...
Lydia Lilli (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 22:29:44 +0000): LOSER!
Roger Bradley (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 22:46:41 +0000): Lydia Lilli I agree with you. If it walks like a loser, smells like a loser and sounds like a loser it must be. HUH?
Sheree Smith (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 18:25:31 +0000): Lydia who are you calling a loser,,, you gays need to keep your sexual preferences to yourself,,,we straight people are tired of you people shoving your lifestyles down our asses,,seriously,,,I could care less if you are gay but stop shoving it down our asses,,,,you stupid fuckers...
Vicki Pacifico (Tue, 07 Feb 2012 00:28:23 +0000): Good Sheree, You won't look good in J.C. Penny's clothes anyway. What a narrow minded, idiotic reason not to buy clothing from a store. Get a life, and grow up. Small minded little twerp.
Lila Christine Redden (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 15:05:35 +0000): Ellen has been openly gay for over a decade, how is it just now that people are going "OMG she's gay"? She's a good person who's entertaining, the rest of has 0 impact on anyone else so it shouldn't matter whether you feel one way or the other.
Michael Lonewolf (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 00:09:21 +0000): I know right? She is also in my opinion one of the cutes women around!
Roger Bradley (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 22:42:06 +0000): Wow the name Jolly must have been a mistake! he should move to Northern Idaho. Of course he probably don't have a clue as to what I'm saying. Thank God the majority of people are figuring out that just because you don't agree with someones life don't mean you have to be a bigot. You know what they say about people that squak the loudest? Ouch touched the same thing in them. Hatred for another human being is sad and painful to the person carrying it, They are just too blinded by their hatred to see that. Guess who losses in the end. Good for you J C Pennys. With companies like you the small amount of ignorant people that are still around will eventually crawl back under their rock. Your loss Sheree. Pennys is probably glad to hear that.
Edwin Walker (Sun, 05 Feb 2012 23:23:02 +0000): When people seek to impose their belief's on others, it makes for a sad state of affairs. Do we really want fanatics, whether or not we belive in their cause forcing everyone to go along with them? Isn't that why the country was originally about? I seemed to recall that it was about being forced to follow the official state religion. Now, we have those who want to do it again.
Pam Chebuhar (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 00:14:30 +0000): I usually like reading Consumer Affairs articles, because I have felt they are generally objective and fair in their coverage of a story. In this case, I object to the way this Consumer Affairs author uses the term "hate group" in the subtitle ("Turns aside complaints from anti-gay hate group which demanded her ouster") as well as in the beginning of the article ( "J.C. Penney has refused to fire Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson, turning aside demands from an anti-gay hate group, OneMillionMoms.com...") without qualification, as though this label is absolutely synonomous with this group, and there is no question about it's status as a "hate group". If this author truly believes it is relevent to the article to include the opinion of the SPLC regarding One Million Moms, I would appreciate it if Consumer Affairs would insist that he sight the source of the label at the beginning of the article instead of way down at the bottom, and note that the label is the opinion of the SPLC before using it to preface the name of the gourp, and stop editorializing for the reader. I had never heard of the One Million Moms group or the SPLC prior to reading this article. I visited the One Million Moms website to see for myself if I think they are a "hate group". I also did some checking into the Southern Poverty Law Center, which apparently is the group pointing the "hate group" finger at One Million Moms. I didn't see any evidence of "hate" on the One Million Moms website, and I would hardly compare them to the KKK, as seems to be the main focus of the SPLC. Expressing your opinion with votes, letter writing and spending habits is a great non-violent, non-hateful way to be heard. Advocates for a gay/lesbian lifestyle certainly do this. I don't see what is so hateful about a bunch of moms doing the same thing. Even if you agree with the SPLC, I think you owe it to your readers to be more objective in your description of the One Million Moms group and let your readers decide for themselves who is hateful. Incidentally, it is possible to disagree with the gay agenda without hating anyone.
Douglas Taylor (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 16:53:47 +0000): When I read this I also wondered about the "hate" speak and is it possible for a group that is not pro gay to be anything but hateful in the gay communities eye. Just for the record... what percentage of the population is gay? I just love how we as a people have become a "minority rules society" and if we speak of our values WE'RE HATERS!!! your lifestyle has to have our blessing so where's the quid pro quo. AS far as I'm concerned close the bedroom door, let the good times roll and keep it there. Oh and for the record I'm pro gay marraige, because along with that comes pro gay divorce and lawyers and settlements and cheaters and detectives... ya and that's good for the economy... as my Moma always said "be careful what you wish for... it just may come true"
Edwin Walker (Tue, 07 Feb 2012 01:35:57 +0000): Douglas, we should be and are free to speak of and honor our values. But, when someone tries to force others to punish them because they do not comply with your religion or values, even though they are causing you no harm, its out of pure hate. That is the issue here, trying to get JC Penney to fire someone because they do not follow a groups values. Its certainly not love. I think you can research their website, and see the hate.
Douglas Taylor (Tue, 07 Feb 2012 20:31:17 +0000): Ed I like Ellen but I also remember a time when she was more than just openly gay, it was more of an in your face flamboyant statement which cost her dearly at that time. She has mellowed, that is why she is loved more today then before because no one wants things shoved all up in their face. As far as a group trying to force values you need only look as far as our own federal government and their actions against Boeing and numerous other things, my objection to the article is the writer forcing his opinion of hate for shock value, and apparently it worked.J C Penny is smart to use her and I bet they are paying plenty for that privilege, let the free market rule and the chips fall were they may.
Jennifer Webre Boehme (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 04:33:23 +0000): We have a family and we have family values. Does it offend me that a gay person is spokeswoman? Not at all. I love her and will not think twice about shopping at Penney's. If I'm not mistaken God loves all his creation.
Juli LeGrand (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 04:39:48 +0000): Agree, Ellen has been openly gay for years, so what is the issue? There is absolutely no reason she should not be the spokeswoman/person for any merchandiser. She's a wonderful spokes person! I am sick of others imposing their views on others constantly. You don't like it, don't shop there. Your choice. And Ellen is entitled to hers. Actually the only group J.C. Penneys needs to worry about is that crank group [Westboro Baptists] of Christians (and I use that term loosely for them) that picket everything out of their scope of acceptability. Personally I say to hell with them. Ignore them, they spend so much time picketing they don't shop anyway. But they, too, are entitled to their opinion, just keep it among themselves. Ellen rules! She's an outright good person and is a great entertainer and if more people acted like her and not carry the world on their sleeves, the world would be a better place. Plus this Mothers group who is screaming about this....ask them how many of them still use "Cover Girl" makeup. enough said.
Pamela Bethoney Spillane (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 14:53:57 +0000): How does OneMillionMoms know that the majority of shoppers are traditional families? Did they survey everyone coming through the door? And what ever happend to equal opportunity? It's sad that some people have nothing better to do. Maybe they should try to find a job.
Michelle Dyer Dean (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 19:20:22 +0000): I will continue to shop at J.C. Penneys. I have no problem with them using Ellen as a spokes Person. Having Traditional values is fine but it should never conflict with Peoples Rights.
Robert Taylor (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 21:18:46 +0000): JCP's scream ads will keep me away, Ellen has nothing to do with why I would or would not shop there, get a life people, Ellen wil NOT turn your children into lesbians, I promises.
Robnett Christine (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 22:25:30 +0000): Seriously people, GET A LIFE I am a straight christian mom and I do not care that Ellen it the spokesperson, I LOVE her! She is hilarious....What is wrong with people...I think some people are just so miserable they have to cause DRAMA to survive.....GET A LIFE......
Michael Starnes (Mon, 06 Feb 2012 22:28:17 +0000): Amen Christine!
Roger Bradley (Tue, 07 Feb 2012 00:52:03 +0000): Michael Starnes; I agreed I get so tired of this group this, this group that. Why do so many peoople feel the need to make everybody elses life their main mission in life? do they some how believe they are protecting the world from everybody that don't believe what they believe and that somehow that is going to earn them a ticket to heaven? I'm affraid they are in for a sad awakening.
Trish Carlson (Tue, 07 Feb 2012 01:57:50 +0000): i agree with u sis, i love watchin her she is so funny and has a great show, y do ppl aways judge who u r, were all ppl who cares how they live there life, live yours and let others lived theres, stop worryin about ppl and put your engery in to workin on something worth ppl talkin about ,like helpin the homless or other groups that need u
Chris Sechrist (Thu, 09 Feb 2012 05:04:10 +0000): ROBNETT I WANT THOSE STOOLS !!!!
Carol Heumann Snider (Thu, 09 Feb 2012 20:44:35 +0000): Haven't really shopped at JCP before. Will now seek them out and spend lots of money there!
