Obama Jobs Speech Lifts His Standing With Consumers

Analysis of 28 million consumer comments shows Obama's star rising

Obama mingles prior to his speech.

Depending on who you read or listen to, President Obama either struck out or hit it out of the park last night. His joint address to Congress was panned by many, loved by others, which is just about status quo for politics these days.

Besides the pundits and talking heads, you can also read a lot of polls and survey results based on a small but, we're told, scientific sampling of a few thousand Americans. Public opinion surveys are fine but sometimes it's interesting to forget about the scientific sample and look at some big numbers.

In that spirit, ConsumerAffairs.com analyzed 28 million consumer comments made on Facebook, Twitter and other social Web sites, blogs and forums over the last year, hoping to glean a new perspective on the state of the nation and its denizens.

What we found, using computerized sentiment analysis, is that consumers' opinion of Obama has been just about evenly divided, though approval has been trending up slowly but steadily since July, when it hit its low point – 14% negative – over the last 12 months, and his fire-and-brimstone speech last night seems to have made the rafters ring and jolted his approval rating 12 or so notches higher.

On Sept. 7, the day before his speech, comments in the blogosphere were just about dead even. By today, positive comments were outpacing negatives by 12%.

Douglas Morgan (Fri, 09 Sep 2011 21:17:57 +0000): To all you nay sayers "PRESIDENT OBAMA" he is still the president and deserves the respect of all you bigots. His hands are tied by small loudmouthed group of GOP TEA PARTIERS that will stop at nothing to get their spoiled ways. You can see it in Boners face each time he speaks, none of them even have the respect of calling him president!
Frank Lauffer (Fri, 09 Sep 2011 21:50:13 +0000): I think that's a hard thing to numerize. People only seem to comment when they're unhappy with someone or something, so I would expect the negatives to always be higher.
Howie Kaplan (Sat, 10 Sep 2011 05:18:59 +0000): Any job programs for "over 55" / seniors long term unemployed, but are quite useful and capable to do many job tasks?
Douglas Morgan (Wed, 14 Sep 2011 16:11:59 +0000): Gian Quasar you are one bitter person, take your energy away from my site please, go take down a crowd of negative minded people.
Rememberthe Alamo (Sat, 10 Sep 2011 15:30:19 +0000): The Consumer Affairs must be one of the 400 JOURNOLIST vowing not to say anything negative re: The Kenyan god-king...give it up. Obviously, your salary is derived direct from the former...and since you know nothing of being jobless nor having a small business--your article ignores F A C T S and reality... WHy is it the more in debt we are the more the government spends. Take for instance the yet another CZAR in the White House and that is on top of the already TAX PAID Un cons titutional Socialist CZARs illegally occupying the White House....bypassing Congress--and USA & States laws.
Rememberthe Alamo (Sat, 10 Sep 2011 15:32:46 +0000): If the Kenyan really wanted us dba the USA to have the jobs our forefathers built by constructing everything in the USA--he would tell the illegals to get out--we are not the world's S L A V E S --not just yet that is! As for the over l01 Un Constitutional Socialist CZARs illegallly inhabiting the White House--: all should be tried for aiding abetting sedition vs One Nation Under GOD.
Marilyn Leiker (Sat, 10 Sep 2011 17:45:52 +0000): Oh, stop already with the "bigot" baloney. Just because the guy is half black, it doesn't mean we can't criticize the PRESIDENT OF THE WHOLE USA. The last time I looked, the First Amendment was still in place and available to all U.S. citizens, and yes, that includes those of us who disagree with the policies made by wanna-be tyrants who want to RULE the whole country. Why don't you tell Jimmy Hoffa to stop calling us Tea Partiers "sons of bitches"? I'm not a son, and my mother certainly was not a dog.
Mike Moldenhauer (Tue, 13 Sep 2011 14:20:25 +0000): I never have, nor ever will call him President however, I believe the man is a puppet of George Soros.
