Despite still-falling crude oil prices, the cost of gasoline at the pump has actually risen slightly in the last week.
The National Average Price of self-serve regular today is $3.592, up from $3.585 last Friday, according to AAA. That's only a dime less that the price a month ago, before oil began its steep sell-off.
The price of diesel fuel today is $3.875, down from $3.888 a week ago.
Even though oil and gasoline stockpiles have fallen in the last week, they remain at elevated levels. With Hurricane Irene churning up the Atlantic coast, energy forecasters have already predicted rising gasoline prices in the storm's wake.
East Coast oil refineries today are in the process of shutting down operations in preparation for the storm. How high the prices rise, they say, depends on any damage that would delay the reopening of the facilities.
