As Hurricane Irene churned its way towards the East Coast, an earthquake measured at 5.9 on the Richter scale shook buildings and rattled residents from South Carolina to Boston.
The earthquake and hurricane come as the D.C. region prepares for this weekend's dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial on the National Mall, expected to draw huge crowds.
The quake was centered in Virginia but caused ripples of alarm up and down the East Coast. The U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon and other government buildings were briefly evacuated.
Flights were delayed at Dulles, Reagan National, JFK, Philadelphia and other major airports. Amtrak suspended service near the epicenter to check the condition of rails and bridges.
In the Northern Virginia counties of Fairfax and Arlington, fire and rescue officials said there were scattered reports of minor damage to buildings but no reports of injuries. Fairfax County police appealed to residents not to call 911 to report the earthquake or ask questions about it.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said initial reports were that no bridges or roadways had failed. The Capitol and the Pentagon were briefly evacuated. Throughout the Washington and Northern Virginia areas, many office workers took shelter in doorways while others left their buildings, FairfaxNews.com reported.
"Our house absolutely danced! Everything here is fine, though," said Ann Simon, a Northern Virginia author, in a Facebook posting.
More to come?
Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey warned that, although the initial quake was brief, it might have been a foreshock, meaning that the worst may be yet to come.
Because of its different geological structure, energy from earthquakes on the East Coast does not attenuate as quickly as it does on the West Coast, and thus even a relatively modest tremor can shake a very broad area.
Office workers in Manhattan told FairfaxNews.com they felt their skyscrapers shake and rattle and some items fell from shelves. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint all reported severe congestion in their cell phone networks, although they said there was no major damage to their equipment.
The quake was centered nine miles from Mineral, Va., which is 100 miles south of Washington, D.C. Doug Kammerer, meteorlogist with the NBC affiliate in Washington, called the tremor a "very big earthquake for our area."
"Definitely felt the earth move; it shook the tables in McDonald's where we were eating," said a retired Associated Press executive in Northern New Jersey. "Thought kids were shaking the booth but there were none when we looked!"
Basil Pinto (Tue, 23 Aug 2011 21:48:16 +0000): didn't feel a thing. Media Hype.
Pallav Streisand (Wed, 24 Aug 2011 06:51:27 +0000): It shook the window blinds and made my dog bark like hell. It was either random vertigo or an earthquake; I assumed the latter. VA.
Sonia Schmidt (Mon, 29 Aug 2011 00:16:25 +0000): more of that earthquake to come? oh my....
Ja N Mau Oxenreider (Mon, 29 Aug 2011 05:08:24 +0000): I KNOW more is to come. Not to be preachy but it's a fact like Jesus stated himself in the bible there will be earthquakes in one place after another. But he also adds about these things not to be come afraid as these things must occur but the end is not yet. The end of this system of things which this world is ruled by Satan and the demons and wicked men. Evil men do in this world also lie and say things did not happen like the global warming which is responsible for the horrible weather and probably the earthquakes also raising the oceans water level pushing on the tectonic plates making them move/earthquakes... Is all evil but soon Jesus and the angels will destroy the evil men and abyss Satan and the demons and we will, the righteous who will be left, help recreate the earth into a paradise as it was in the beginning with all who are there having the chance of living forever on this paradise earth in perfection, something no one knows about but Adam and Eve but they are gone forever. Not preaching, it's the truth! Thank you for the information!
Laney Miller (Tue, 30 Aug 2011 17:05:19 +0000): I just clicked through the pictures of Hurricane Irene in OBX. The damage is just awful, but what is even MORE terrible is your complete lack of sensitivity to all the people who lost some if not all of their possesions. You judge everyone for not moving their RV's and tell them that they had plenty of time to move them. Most of these homes were permanent fixtures and could not be moved! You preach about Jesus and the end of time...doesn't Jesus tell us not to judge others? That is EXACTLY what you are doing. Until you have a little compassion, keep your comments to yourself. God forbid something like this happen to you and someone gives you a taste of your own ignorance.
