Cosmetic surgery is one thing but the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) says terrorists are thinking about surgically implanting explosives into humans. Airline passengers boarding flights from overseas may encounter additional screening because of the threat, TSA said.
"These measures are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same activity at every international airport," Kimball said, according to The Los Angeles Times. "Measures may include interaction with passengers, in addition to the use of other screening methods such as pat-downs and the use of enhanced tools and technologies."
While it's thought that most such threats would come from overseas, federal officials say they are also ordering heightened security measures at domestic airports.
Existing scanners are not able to detect most explosive materials under a person's skin. They would be detectable only with trace detection swabs, which are currently used on only a small fraction of passengers.
There's no indication of an immediate plot but intelligence sources have indicated that terrorist groups are displaying renewed interest in surgically implanted bombs.
