If you bought an Apple iPad 2 to run on Verizon's 3G network, and seem to be having connectivity problems, it's not your imagination. Apple says there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
The problem surfaced not long after the devices went on sale earlier this year. Apple says some iPad 2 owners whose tablets run on Verizon Wireless are finding they have trouble restoring their 3G connection once they turn it off. In fact, the only way to get it back on is to reboot.
Not all Verizon 3G iPads seem to be affected. In a statement, Apple characterized the number as "small."
In the days following the release of the second generation iPad, some Verizon customers began posting complaints on Apple discussion boards across the Internet. While the software switch to turn off the 3G antenna worked fine, they said they found turning it back on again was problematic.
One consumer, posting under the name "oplus," reported it to a local Verizon store back in March.
"They hadnt heard anything about it from anyone else," oplus wrote. "She said she would make a call to higher ups and call me back, which she hasnt yet, as well as note it in my account. I tried to duplicate the issue at the store but failed. The issue for me seems rather intermittent, like once a day, and I can always get it back on after reboots so I'm ok for now. However, this is not acceptable for the long run."
In a statement to All Things Digital, Apple acknowledged the problem and said it is investigating.
