Nissan Will Close U.S., Mexico Plants For a Week

Aftershocks of Japan earthquake continue to rumble through the auto industry

Nissan is the latest automaker to respond to the Japan earthquake. The company says it will close its U.S. Plants for six days because of parts shortages. Plants in Mexico will close for five days.

The company said it hopes to make up for the lost time later this year by running its plants during the times when they would normally be shut down to retool for the new model year.

Automotive News reported that Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares said he expected the Japan supply chain to be working normally by the end of April but said it's possible that not all suppliers will be fully operational by then.

Honda said earlier this week that it was cutting shifts at most of its North American plants because of parts shortages. GM closed a Louisiana plant the week of March 21 but has since reopened it.
