Suit Claims Restaurant Coupons Left Patrons Hungry

Some Restaurant.com coupons were for defunct restaurants, class action charges

A class action accuses Internet merchant Restaurant.com of selling restaurant coupons to restaurants that are no longer in business.

In the suit, Christy Cora of Miami alleges that Restaurant.com “sells retaurant coupons to Internet customers knowing that many of such coupons are for restaurants that are no longer in business.”

Restaurant.com says it offers savings to more than 18,000 participating restaurants nationwide. Its website says it offers more than 45,000 daily gift certificate options.

Cora said that she purchased a coupon for Restaurant Ibiza in Coral Gables, Fla., only to find out that not only was the restaurant not in business but had never been in business, the complaint charges. The suit alleges the company is in violation of Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (FDUPTA).

The suit seeks damages on behalf of all Florida residents who have bought coupons that turned out to be worthless and estimates the number of such victims to be “in excess of 1,000.”

The suit was filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court.
