Facebook Edging Into Groupon's Space

And it's patching potholes in Columbus, Ohio

Facebook is the latest Groupon wannabe. The social network is cranking up a service that will provide local discounts to its more than 500 million registered members. Others trying to move in on Groupon and its rival LivingSocial include Walmart, Google and even The New York Times.

Facebook says its users will be able to find deals on a special page that will list all the local promotions in their area. And, being socially inclined, Facebook says you'll not only be able to find deals, you'll be able to share them with your friends.

Besides its own sales team, Facebook will be aggregating deals from several partners including Gilt City, Tippr, KGB Deals and Zozi.

Yes, but will we have to use our Facebook Credits to do the deals?

So far Facebook isn't saying. It has been looking for ways to increase usage of the Credits, which can now be used to buy digital games. Facebook does this not just to be friendly but because it keeps 30 percent of the revenue.

Meanwhile, in Columbus, Ohio, city officials are building a Facebook page where citizens will be able to report potholes and other annoyances.

“As we step up our efforts to repair our streets, I also want to expand the options for residents who see potholes,” said a city official.
