For whatever
reason, the world is fascinated by actor Charlie Sheen's exploits.
The fact that Sheen amassed two million followers in Twitter almost
overnight attests to that.
So predictably enough, scammers are taking advantage of the public's fascination with a new Facebook scam. Under the heading, "Charlie Sheen is one sick puppy," the scheme attempts to lure in the curious and make money by having them fill out a survey.
"Charlie Sheen is one Sick Puppy, ADULTS ONLY GUYS!! This is his first attempt at Homemade Sex Action! http://BAD URL," the message reads.
Other versions include:
- "Just when you thought Charlie Sheen Couldn't go any lower(or Higher), the sicko surpasses all our Expectations!"
- "Holy Sh*t - Charlie Sheen $ex Tape Released by Ex-Wife! - ADULTS ONLY!!
- Charlie Sheen in his best Performance yet!
- Charlie Sheen has turned to another addiction, and he takes it to the limit. ADULTS ONLY!!!"
To see what they are talking about, you are told to add an application. If you do, you are directed to a video player that resembles YouTube, where you receive a survey scam popup. After filling out the survey, you are directed to a video.
The video is a spoof from break.com that makes fun of Sheen by dubbing his voice over a fake sex video. If you've made the mistake of adding the application, security experts at Sophos Security says you need to remove it to prevent it from posting to your wall and spamming itself out to all of your friends.
Sophos' Senior Security Advisor Chester Wisniewski reports the Sheen scam is not the only one seeking to trade on celebrities in the news.Spam scams involving Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Christine Aguilera are also showing up frequently.
"I am genuinely overwhelmed with the number of scams being reported to us, Wisniewski wrote in his blog.
