Hyundai is recalling 140,000 Hyundai Sonatas because there could be a problem with the vehicle's steering.

Improper assembly or insufficient tightening of the connections could result in a complete separation or compromised attachment of the connections, such that the driver could experience a loss of, or reduction in, steering capability increasing the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Website.

The company said there have been no reported accidents and the recall was initiated as a precaution. It said it to its knowledge fewer than 10 vehicles had the steering problem.

"Hyundai dealers will inspect the steering-column intermediate-shaft universal-joint connections for proper assembly and torque and make corrections if needed," the company said. "Hyundai has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is voluntarily initiating this action to ensure the safety and quality of vehicles and the continued satisfaction of its customers."

Included in the recall are all Hyundai Sonata models built since 2009.

Earlier this year, Hyundai issued a recall for 47,000 Sonatas in South Korea and the U.S. because of a problem with the door locks.

The Sonata is the Korean carmaker's best selling model, accounting for about 35 percent of U.S. sales.
