Gas Below $3 Nationwide

36 states report price drop

For the first time since February, the average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline has fallen below $3. The current average price is 2.889, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The U.S. Department of Energy's survey of gas stations put the national average price only slightly higher, at $2.91.

In the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, the average price of gas is approaching levels of one year ago, when the price was $2.819. The price has fallen in recent weeks because of declining demand. In addition, the price of oil has dropped dramatically from its record high of nearly $148 a barrel back in July.

Oklahoma continues to have the cheapest gas in the nation, with a statewide average price of $2.461 for a gallon of unleaded regular. Alaska has the highest price at $3.844.

According to AAA, 36 states have average gas prices below $3 as of today.
