Fire Hazard Prompts Ford Edge, Lincoln MKK Recall

Only 142 vehicles involved so far

Ford is recalling 142 of the new Edge and Lincoln MKK all-wheel-drive crossovers because of an improper fuel tank weld that could lead to a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"The fuel tank weld fixture may have been exposed to a contaminant during production that could cause a dimple in the bottom of the fuel tank at a spot weld," according to NHTSA. "This dimple could result in a fuel tank leak or a fuel drip from the tank. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire," the federal safety agency warned on its Web site.

Ford dealers will replace the fuel tank free of charge following an inspection to determine if the tank is flawed.

Consumers can contact Ford about the fuel tank in their Edge or MKK at 1-800-424-9153.
