New York has joined Connecticut and Alaska with a statewide average gasoline price above $4 a gallon.
Regular self-serve gasoline now sells for $4.002 in the Empire State, $4.062 in Connecticut and $4.102 in Alaska.
Three other states, California, Hawaii and Illinois are within a nickel of the $4 mark.
The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is up to $3.807 marking 15 consecutive days of increases setting 14 price records in a row.
One month ago regular gasoline sold for $3.503 and one year ago a gallon of regular cost $3.209.
Diesel is selling for $4.558, an increase of 2.1 cents overnight and also a new record price.
Arizona enjoys the cheapest statewide average gasoline price at $3.626 a gallon. Missouri and Wyoming are tied for second on the list at $3.631 a gallon.
Oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg warned the worst is far from over. There is a "high possibility" that the national average gasoline price will reach $4 a gallon soon, she said.
"We are within 21 cents of $4 a gallon," Lundberg said. "There seems to be very good chance that we will reach it."
