Consumers Turn Away from Trucks, SUVs in April

Consumers are turning their backs on SUVs and pickup trucks in favor of small and fuel-efficient cars.

Ford Motor Company reported that SUV sales sank 36 percent in April and truck sales were down 19 percent. Sales of the Ford F-150, the number one selling vehicle in the U.S., dropped 21 percent when compared to last April.

By contrast, sales of the Ford Focus were up 43.5 percent.

General Motors trucks and SUVs declined as well, down 26.5 percent in April to 140,098. Last April, GM sold 190,678 trucks.

Sales of the new Chevrolet Malibu were up 39 percent over a year ago. In April Chevrolet dealers sold 17,050 Malibus compared with 12,218 sold last year.

Sales of the subcompact Aveo were up 23.5 percent over last year. The small Cobalt saw a sales increase of 25.1 percent.

Truck and SUV sales at Toyota are down as well, off 15.7 percent when compared to last year.

The Prius hybrid remains the hot selling car at Toyota. The little hybrid recorded its best April sales numbers ever increasing by 66 percent or 8,701 vehicles.
