Chrysler Recalls Sebrings, Avengers

Tire pressure monitoring system problem

Chrysler is recalling 180,963 2007 to 2008 model year Sebring and Dodge Avengers that are equipped with the standard tire pressure monitoring system. The wiring in the system can corrode causing a short circuit, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NHTSA warns that the short circuit can cause multiple problems in the Sebring and Avenger.

The electrical problem can cause the engine to fail to start, the remote starting system to fail, drain and kill the battery, render the cruise control system inoperative or the vehicle to stall, the safety agency reported on its Web site.

Federal regulators warned the engine stalling could cause a crash without warning.

Chrysler dealers will repair the wires in the tire pressure monitoring system that are subject to corrosion free of charge when the recall begins April 15.

Sebring and Avenger owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
