Ford Motor Co. is recalling 124,000 SUVs to replace a door handle spring that may break, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA).

The spring is located on interior side door handles of 2007 and 2008 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators. Ford told NHTSA that the door latches work even if the handle spring breaks but a recall will be conducted because the doors might open in a crash.

"In the event of a side impact crash, the interior door handle may cause the door latch to open increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant," NHTSA reported on its web site.

Ford dealers will replace the door handle spring on all side doors when the recall begins.

SUV owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153.
