Toyota is now the second-best-selling automotive brand in the U.S. dropping Ford to third place in 2007.
Toyota can thank its lucky Prius. The popular little hybrid was a big winner, dominating the hybrid market at more than 50 percent of all hybrid sales. Prius sales set a record in 2007 at 181,221, a 53 percent gain over 2006
Overall, Toyota sold 61,962 more cars and light trucks than Ford with 2.62 million vehicles sold during the year, 16.8 percent of the U.S. market.
Ford managed to sell 2.56 million or 16.4 percent of the U.S. market.
2007 was a bad year all around for Ford. The company spent time, energy and money on restructuring efforts aimed at making a profit sometime in the future in the face of growing consumer skepticism and negative perception of Ford products and quality.
December sales at Ford dropped 11.8 percent.
Sales of the F-150 pickup were down 13.2 percent for the year even though the pickup remains the best-selling vehicle in the country.
But not all news in 2007 was good for Toyota. the Japanese automaker failed to meet a sales target of 200,000 for the new Tundra pickup, selling 196,555 of the large trucks for the year.
General Motors sold 3.82 million vehicles in 2007, down from 4.06 million sold in 2006 but still enough to hang onto the #1 bragging rights ... at least for now.
