NHTSA Recalls 57,100 Pontiacs and Chevys

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is recalling 57,100 Pontiac Torrent and Chevrolet Equinox cars because vehicles that are not equipped with the optional roof rail airbag systems or optional sunroof fail to comply with federal rules that require occupant protection in interior impact.

That means there is an increased risk of head injury in a crash, according to federal regulators.

Chevrolet and Pontiac dealers will install an energy absorbing foam piece to each of the a-pillar trim assemblies in the 57,100 General Motors Corp. when the recall gets under way in January.

There will be no charge for the foam or the installation.
