Upgrades are supposed to be improvements, but as is often the case, one person's idea of an improvement is another's step backward.

Apple’s new version of its iTunes software, introduced last week, is drawing a number of complaints from users.

“There are countless complaints on the iPod discussion boards stating that upgrading to the newest version of iTunes has caused problems - lost music, iTunes won't load and so on,” Ray, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, told ConsumerAffairs.com.

We checked and he’s right. Not just boards but blogs are peppered with complaints from iPod users.

Apple says it has taken notice of the complaints and is working on a fix. But the company suggests the problem is not widespread.

“Apple is aware that a limited number of customers are experiencing issues with installing iTunes 5,” company officials said in a statement. “We're working to resolve this and expect to have a software update early next week.”

Among those who say they have experienced problems, many complain that installing the upgrade simply causes their computers to crash. Others say they can successfully install the software, but can’t then transfer music to their iPods.

They also say the new software can interfere with other programs on their computers and delete existing playlists.

“Apple still has hyperlinks asking for more people to upgrade to the newest version of the iTunes software,” Ray cautions. "Beware – down not download!”
