DFW Airlines Reap Windfall From Budget SurplusConsumers may get a price break when landing fees are reduced |

By Dan Schlossberg September 10, 2007
Because it is the biggest carrier at DFW, the biggest beneficiary will be American Airlines. American and all other airlines at the Texas airport have already gotten one break this year, when the airport lowered landing fees, and will get a similar break before year’s end. Airport officials say it will be some $48 million under budget when DFW ends its current fiscal year on Sept. 30. Airport staff will benefit too: its pension fund and other benefits will get an estimated $13 million out of the budget surplus. The second round of landing fee reductions is expected to be a boon to consumers, who could realize lower fares from DFW flights. Increased airline competition could also help, especially if they involve discount airlines. Dallas-Fort Worth is served by 45 different airlines, including numerous foreign-flag carriers.
