Average National Gas Price at $3 |

The average national price fell 2 cents overnight to $3.00 a gallon, according to AAA. Gasoline news sells for less than $3 a gallon in 23 states with the cheapest average price found in South Carolina at $2.79. The average retail price is close to dipping below $3 a gallon for the second time since peaking at $3.23 a gallon in late May. One month ago regular gasoline sold for $3.00 and one year ago a gallon sold for $2.99. A gallon of mid-grade gasoline now sells for $3.19 and supreme goes for $3.31. The most expensive gallon of gasoline is once again found on Beaver island in Michigan. The least expensive gallon of gasoline sells in Huber Heights, Ohio for $2.50. Here is a look as some prices from around the country in the weekly ConsumerAffairs.com Gas Price Round Up. California: Drivers in the state are no longer paying the highest gas prices in the in the continental U.S.. California's gas prices are usually second only to those in Hawaii but now gasoline in the state costs less than in 14 other states. Prices are higher in Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wisconsin, according to data compiled by AAA of Northern California auto club. The average price of a gallon of gas in California in July was $3.14, a 16 cent drop from June and 11 cents less than the price during the same period last year. The highest average gas prices in California are in Eureka at $3.42 per gallon. Chico ranked lowest at $3.05. The highest price in San Francisco is $3.37. The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.11, which is seven-tenths of a penny higher than last week. In San Diego, the price is $3.12, which is half a cent higher that last week's price. Texas: Retail gasoline prices throughout Texas are up in some markets, while prices are down in others, according to the AAA Weekend Gas Watch. San Antonio drivers are paying $2.86 for a gallon of gasoline and that is virtually the same for gas this week as last week. Drivers in Amarillo are paying the most for gas at $3.18 this week, down 12 cents from its all-time record high of $3.30 last week. Corpus Christi has the cheapest gas average in the state at $2.82 a gallon. This is down 2 cents from last week. In Houston and Dallas, however, prices rose slightly. In Houston, drivers are paying $2.84 per gallon, up 1.4 cents on average from last week. Dallas drivers are paying $2.87 on average, up 1.7 cents from last week. Florida: A couple of Florida power companies plan to refine ethanol form grapefruit and orange peels. FPL Energy and Citrus Energy have combined to develop the first ever commercial scale citrus peel to ethanol plant. The cellulosic ethanol plant will be owned and operated by FPL Energy and is expected to produce four million gallons of ethanol per year. It will be located on the grounds of a Florida citrus processor. “FPL Energy is delighted to be working with Citrus Energy on this exciting new project to produce a clean, affordable, and domestically-produced biofuel utilizing Florida’s existing citrus industry infrastructure and bringing new jobs to rural communities,” said Mike O’Sullivan, senior vice president of development for FPL Energy. In the meantime, the average price for regular gasoline in Florida is $2.96. Mid-grade sells for $3.21 and supreme sells for $3.27. Report Your Experience
