Another Florida importer is recalling Chinese-manufactured toothpaste that may contain a deadly chemical found in antifreeze.

The chemical, diethylene glycol, is a Central Nervous System depressant and potent kidney and liver toxin. It killed 51 residents of Panama a year ago after it was found in Chinese-imported cough syrup.

The importer, MainStar America in Miami, Fla. is recalling:

• Dr. Cool Toothpaste – 4 ounces
• Superdent Toothpaste – 4 ounces
• Everfresh Smile2 Toothpaste – 1 ounce

This follows a similar recall Tuesday in which Gold City Enterprise in Hallandale, Fla. recalled 6.4 and 9 ounce tubes of:

• Shir Fresh Mint Fluoride
• Shir Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste
• Shir Fresh Ice Shir Mint Fluoride Toothpaste.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested that retailers immediately examine their inventory and quarantine the recalled products.

Consumers should either return the product for a refund or throw it away.

Consumers who believe Chinese-made toothpaste has made them sick are encouraged to file a complaint with the FDA’s MedWatch division and with ConsumerAffairs.com.
