SAMS Food Recalls Beef, Chicken Products

By Lisa Wade McCormick

June 23, 2007
SAMS Food Group has recalled 13,300 pounds of beef- and chicken-based products because the labels were switched.

The company said its beef-based products contain wheat gluten and soy protein and those ingredients are not in its chicken-based products.

These soup-based products are used to make bouillon, the company said. The Washington Post, however, incorrectly identified them as pet food products, the company told ConsumerAffairs.com.

The Bedford Park, Illinois, company discovered the problem after receiving consumer complaints about the product label switch.

The company and the federal Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) have not received any reports of illness related to consumption of these products. But they say anyone concerned about allergic reactions should contact a physician.

Here is a list of the products involved in the recall:

• 16-ounce white plastic jars of "DAS DUTCHMAN ESSENHAUS CHICKEN BASE, AMISH COUNTRY KITCHEN." Each jar has the number "EST. P 18796" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The top of each jar contains the package code "Best by 1/2008" and one of the following identifying codes, "L06332 P06333 1200B," "L06312 P06313 1100A," "L06331B P06333 1100A," "L06321 P06324 1100A," "L06307 P06311 1100A," "L06352A P06353 1100A or L06331A P06333 1100A."
