March 20, 2007
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports it will investigate General Motors' mid-size SUVs, citing 16 complaints about corrosion on fuel pump modules.

The inquiry, which covers 2002 to 2003 Envoy XL and XUV versions and TrailBlazer EXT models, is the agency's first step in its safety review process and may or may not lead to a recall.

NHTSA said consumers have complained of a gasoline odor and have seen fuel dripping from the tank.

The fuel pump module or sending unit is located in the fuel tank and its top is ex[posed to the air.

NHTSA is also investigating reports from some consumers that the "Service Engine Light Soon" or "Check Engine Light" has illuminated. Other complaints report that a crack of split in the fuel tank was "found at the junction of the fuel filler pipe and the fuel tank" is some TrailBlazer EXT and Envoy Ex models.

While most of the complaints indicate the fuel tank was replaced to fix the leak, GM issued a special policy for 2002 TrailBlazer EXT and Envoy XL vehicles to repair the fuel tank check valve.
