In a stunning about face, Microsoft Corp. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of consumers in Iowa, who claimed they were systematically overcharged for the company's software products.

Terms of the settlement were not immediately disclosed.

Iowa consumers had achieved class status and sued Microsoft for $329 million in damages. Under Iowa law, the damages could have been tripled.

The trial, which began in December, came to an abrupt halt today when Judge Scott Rosenburg was informed of the settlement. The judge, who must approve the terms of the settlement, ordered both sides to withhold any comment until he has had a chance to review it.

The Iowa case, which covers consumers who have purchased Microsoft software products since 1994, is one of the last of the pending anti-trust cases against the technology giant.
