Lots of people are promoting colon cleansing these days. There are dozens of websites dedicated to cleansing the colon, either with herbs you eat or hydrotherapy, the nice word for a big, expensive enema.

And after that don't forget to detoxify with expensive herbs and potions.

The benefits? Colon cleansing supposedly improves your health, mood, mind, body, and digestion. It will supposedly help you lose weight and relieve constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Oh don't forget, these websites add, it also helps prevent heart disease, cancer, a large prostate, and World War III.

Enough already. There's not a single scientific study or article showing a single benefit from colon cleansing. Not one.

Not only will it drain your wallet, colon cleansing can hurt you. It can cause a dangerous loss of water and electrolytes which can lead to dehydration and even abnormal heart rhythms. It can also seriously harm your colon.

What to do?

Eat a high-fiber low-fat diet -- with plenty of fruits and vegetables -- and drink lots of water. It's the right way to stay regular and to have a healthy, happy colon.
