Phony Charity Scams Victimize the Good-Hearted |

By Mark Huffman January 24, 2007
Here are some red flags that indicate the organization calling you for a donation is not legitimate.
Before contributing to any organization that's unfamiliar to you, ask that the information to be sent to you in writing. Ask how much of your gift will be used directly for the charity. Ask how much will go toward administrative costs. Legitimate charities have no problem giving you this information. If you're contacted by someone who says they represent a well-known charity, don't rush to write a check. Don't hesitate to contact the charity to find out if they know about the appeal and have authorized it. Above all, never give out your personal or financial information over the phone, or at the door. Report Your Experience
