Continuing to accelerate the nationwide rollout of its $4 generic prescription drug promotion, Wal-Mart has added 12 more states to the 15 where the discounts are already available.

Effective immediately, Wal-Mart will sell a 30-day supply of 314 generic prescription drugs in the following 27 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, South Dakota, Virginia, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Vermont.

Wal-Mart began the program in Florida in September, but quickly added other states based on what company executives said was an overwhelmingly positive response.

The discount prescriptions are now available at in 2,507 Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Neighborhood Market stores in the states offering the plan.

The company has said it is trying to take the program nationwide by the end of the year.
