Plaza Resorts Settles Florida Charges

Company Refunds $200,000 to Consumers

The state of Florida has reached an agreement with a South Florida travel company, resolving allegations of deceptive advertising practices that targeted unsuspecting customers, according to Attorney General Charlie Crist.

Plaza Resorts, Inc. will reimburse affected consumers and change its business practices to address the advertising concerns.

Crist's Economic Crimes Division began investigating the company in May 2005 after receiving numerous complaints about the Fort Lauderdale company's travel packages.

Consumers claim that ads for travel packages did not specify that in order to purchase the package, consumers had to attend timeshare sales presentations. Other issues included unclear refund and cancellation policies, undisclosed rental car and port charges and problems with the company's call centers.

"Our citizens and guests should not have to worry about being snowed by travel companies in the Sunshine State," said Crist. "This agreement should allow travelers to enjoy their vacations, not be surprised by hidden costs and details."

As part of the agreement, Plaza Resorts has already refunded more than $200,000 to more than 260 affected consumers around the world and will continue to provide reimbursements to consumers who lodge complaints after the date of the agreement.

The company will now notify consumers of the timeshare presentation requirement and will address refund requests and availability in its advertisements. It will clearly disclose travel fees and costs, provide specific notices of cancellation policies and keep track of the refunds paid to consumers.

Consumers wanting to lodge complaints and apply for reimbursement should contact the Florida Attorney General's office.

The company will also reimburse the state for the costs of the investigation.
