NHTSA Probes Taurus and Sable for Suspension Failure

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the 2001 and 2002 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable because of consumer complaints of fractures in the rear coil springs.

NHTSA reports that it opened the investigation "based on 131 vehicle owner questionnaires related to alleged related to alleged rear coil spring fractures."

Since opening the investigation, NHTSA reports there have been an additional 63 complaints about broken rear springs. "An analysis of the vehicle owner questionnaires reveals that 42 percent of the complaints allege the adjacent tire was punctured as a result of the coil spring fracture."

NHTSA says on its web site that it is opening an engineering analysis to examine potential safety implication of the rear spring failure and tire punctures.
