With the discount plan, GM sells anyone a new car or truck at the same price a GM employee would pay. The promotion was scheduled to expire Sept. 6.

GM will now include some large pickups and SUVs from the 2006 model year in the promotion. The sales effort had previously been limited to 2005 model-year vehicles.

GM sales slowed in August after a substantial increase in June and July.

Through the first 15 days of this month, GM's retail market share fell 12.1 percentage points from July to August, according to J.D Power and Associates' Power Information Network, which compiles retail sales data.

Many GM dealers emptied their lots in June and July and have very little inventory left to sell.
