Subaru Rust Problem Prompts Recall

May 1, 2003
Subaru is recalling about 170,000 vehicles in the northern and Midwestern U.S., the so-called "salt belt" region, due to possible rusting of the rear suspension.

The company said that rear suspension components could rust after several years of exposure to road salts. The corrosion could cause the subframe to break, which could cause a driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Models covered included some Legacy, Outback and Baja vehicles from the 2000 to 2003 model years.

The recall includes vehicles sold in or currently registered in 22 states and the District of Columbia.
