Mazda is recalling 174,000 cars and vans to rewire a fog lamp that has been wired incorrectly in some vehicles. In at least one instance, the faulty lamp was blamed for setting fire to a Mazda's bumper.
The recall includes the hot-selling Mazda6 sedan. The recall announcement came on the same day that the company announced the Mazda6 had won 50 awards in 22 countries since it was introduced a year ago.
The other models being recalled are MPVs built between May 1999 and February 2003 and Miata sports cars made from December 1997 through February 2003.
Mazda, which is one-third owned by Ford, said that about 37,000 of the vehicles being recalled were sold in Japan. The rest were exported to Europe and the U.S.
Mazda also said that some Mazda6 models had a faulty brake oil tank that could fail to illuminate the brake warning lamp.
