GM Recalls SUVs Again

May 7, 2002
General Motors is recalling its mid-size SUVs again -- the fifth time in the past year. This time the problem involves fuel filters.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said GM will recall 65,000 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada SUVs manufactured between September and November 2001. A fitting on the fuel filter can come loose, possibly cutting off the fuel supply to the engine and causing a fuel leak.

The other recalls have been for problems in the suspension, the four-wheel-drive systems and, in the case of the Envoy, for a technical violation of NHTSA rules.

There've been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the fuel filter problem, GM said.

The models have been big sellers, with more than 110,000 wheeling off dealers' lots in the first four months of the year. GM has claimed to be improving its quality procedures and is hoping to surpass some of the Japanese automakers in the upcoming J.D. Power quality survey.
