GM Recalls Vehicles to Fix Airbags

August 19, 2002 General Motors is recalling about 720,000 vehicles to fix two problems airbag problems that could cause the bags to malfunction in a crash.

One recall covers about 570,000 full-size 2000 model-year Chevrolet and GMC pickups and SUVs. In those vehicles, airbag sensor and diagnostic modules could interfere with airbag deployment, GM said. Dealers will recalibrate the units to resolve the problem.

The second recall covers 150,000 cars, SUVs and minivans built between May and June 2002. About 8,000 of the vehicle are thought to have faulty airbag inflator modules. The modules could crack open if the bag deployed, leaving the bag less than fully inflated.

The company said that both problems were discovered during testing. There've been no reports of injuries associated with the defects.
