| Value America Targets "Subprime" Buyers With Proteva Deal | ||||
|
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Aug. 17, 1999 -- Value America and US Wired for Education have formed a partnership to sell Proteva computers to customers with "subprime" credit. The 350-mHz Proteva computers include a monitor and a one-year warranty and can be financed over a 39-month period for $24.95, for a total payment of $973.05. Those who finance the purchase through ValueAmerica will get "free" Internet access for the life of the contract, the company said. "Given that Proteva is the undisputed leader in customer complaints to our site, it's not clear that Value America is doing a great service to the credit-impaired," said James R. Hood, President of ConsumerAffairs.Com. "One would have to wonder whether the combination of a one-year warranty and a three-year loan is not creating more problems than it's solving." Value America is headquartered in Charlottesville, Va. Proteva is located in Posen, Ill. a suburb of Chicago.
