Proteva Files Bankruptcy Petition

CHICAGO, Sept. 7, 1999 -- Proteva has filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition with the U.S. District Court in Chicago, citing debt of more than $10 million to Microsoft, 3Com, Federal Express and other vendors.

The Posen, Ill., company's low-priced Windows computers have been a frequent source of consternation to purchasers, including many first-time computer owners who bought their units through the Home Shopping Network.

Consumers also complained that technical support for the troubled machines was spotty and often ineffectual.  In its filing, the company said it owes nearly $500,000 to Banctec Service of Dallas and $150,000 to Timespace Internet of Fort Worth, two of its more recent tech support contractors.

The bankruptcy filing effectively wipes out the warranty on Proteva machines.  Timespace is offering a one-year service plan for $120.  Consumers can call 1-888 820-3281 for information.

Proteva owners should also consider finding a local service and repair facility, ConsumerAffairs.Com President James Hood said.

"Most computer problems are fairly simple and can be solved by local computer shops on an as-needed basis," Hood said.  "Most consumers would be better off finding a knowledgeable local technician than relying on faraway service centers that may or may not meet their needs and that require upfront payment for service that may or may not be needed."

An initial hearing on the bankruptcy case was set for Oct. 4.
