February 23, 2000 It seemed like such a good idea, a little Internet computer
complete with free access and an office suite for less than
$500. But for whatever reason, Microworkz wasn't able to get
its sales, production and finances in line.
The problems began late last year, with consumers complaining
they had ordered and paid for computers from the Seattle company
but had never received them.
The Washington state attorney general opened an investigation
and filed suit
against the company and its president, Rick Latman, in November
1999. The Federal Trade Commission also opened an investigation
and several individual consumers and suppliers filed suit against
the company as well.
Now the firm is out of business, its 200 employees dismissed
and its 100,000 square foot offices empty.
Latman, 34, has made no public statements since the closing.
He is named personally in the attorney general's suit, which
at last word was continuing.
"The fact is people still haven't got their money back,"
Assistant Attorney General Paula Sells said. She said the business'
closing would have no effect on Latman's status as an individual
defendant.
The Seattle Times reported that Latman and his wife had
previously operated a bridal-gown business in Southern California.
That business eventually declared bankrtupcy, leaving many customers
in the lurch.
