The massive recall of Firestone tires used on Ford Explorers and other vehicles is struggling to keep up with consumer demand. Here are some of the latest developments:

  • Consumers may have tires replaced free of charge at any company-owned Firestone Tire and Service Center, at some Firestone retailers or at Ford, Mercury and Mazda dealers.
  • Consumers may purchase other tire brands from any retailer and receive a refund of up to $100 per tire, including ounting and balancing charges and taxes. Note: The old tires must be returned to a Firestone or Ford dealer to obtain a refund certificate.
  • Bridgestone/Firestone is air freighting additional tires from Japan to help meet the demand for tires in the U.S.
  • Ford has suspended production of models that use the ATX and Wilderness tires to increase the supply of tires.
  • Other manufacturers have increased production of the tire size involved in the recall.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is conducting an investigation into the cause of the tire separations and accidents to determine the cause.
