In a setback to its campaign to restore consumer confidence, Bridgestone/Firestone is recalling 100,000 tires sold as original equipment on some Nissan Altimas. It's the third recall of Firestone tires since last summer.
The recall follows consumer complaints about cracks in the rubber along the edge of the tread and shoulder of the P205/55R16 Firehawk GTA-02 tires. The tires were sold as original equipment on about 23,000 2000 and 2001 Nissan Altima SE models.
Bridgestone/Firestone is offering to replace the problem tires with the same type of Firestones but said it would also supply similar Bridgestone tires to consumers who want them.
The company says it doesn't know of any accidents attributed to the tires.
In August, Firestone recalled 6.5 million tires that had been implicated in about 170 deaths in teh U.S. Most of those tires had been installed on Ford Explorers. In January, a smaller number of tires, also used on SUVs, were recalled.
