A Working Stiff's Advice

Mark of Placentia CA writes (6/3/04):
I have been a furniture mover for over 10 years now, and I would just like to let people know that what happens is the owners get rich while the workers do all the work, they make not that much and the managers generally make the poor driver take all the heat as they trump up the charges.

They make you work with different people everyday. And many times cheat the worker out of money as well.

It's very competetive, and most of the workers -- believe it or not -- are recently out of jail. Who else wants work so hard for not much?

This is good and bad -- they are kept in line quite well as most companies have a direct pipeline with the police, and a person who steals in this business will not last long.

Try to be aware of what is happening and be prepared to deal directly with the owner or manager. A good tip is to tell the workers right off the bat, hey if you do a good job I will tip!

If you don't like the price rent your own truck and go hire some illegals on the corner. They really are good workers and appreciate the work.
