Andrea of Portland OR writes (6/13/03):
I arranged a local move estimated at ~$500. The movers decided to wrap every piece of furntiure in furniture pads inside the house and tape the pads in place before loading the truck. They also would not move the TV's unless I purchased the bubble wrap and boxes from the company. I refused both the TV packaging and furniture wrapping. Their contract said that I would be charged for materials I chose to use, but could refuse to use materials if I took full liability for damage. I said I would take the risk. The movers refused to move anything until I complied with their wrapping techniques.
I ended up with a local move costing $900 because I was charged for $72 in tape, $50 materials, and several more hours of moving time to wrap every item. I complained to the company about not being able to refuse the services as I desired and they offered a $40 refund on the tape.
