They say a diamond is forever, and who's to say it isn't? But, although a diamond or other piece of jewelry may be a good investment, it's not a good idea to spend a fortune on gold and precious gems unless you actually have a fortune.

It's important to keep in mind that there is no hard and fast method of appraising diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones. They're worth whatever someone's willing to pay -- which in hard times may not be very much. So, unless you're an expert, our advice is to go easy on the glittery stuff.
