Court OKs StarBand's Bankruptcy Exit
Files to emerge from bankrtupcy

For Internet users in rural areas, Starband sounds like a gift from the heavens. It's a satellite-based Internet service that claims to provide broadband-speed up and down service, eliminating the need for dial-up, DSL or cable modem connections, which are often unavailable or problematic in isolated areas. It also delivers DISH satellite TV programming.

Unfortunately, the consumers we've heard from say that instead of being a blessing from the gods, Starband has been more like being hit in the head with a rock. "The service is awful and getting worse," said Seinne of Guffey, Colo.

Things haven't turned out all that well for the company either. Starband filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 31, 2002. It is trying to emerge from bankruptcy and filed a reorganization plan with the court in August 2003.

Among other things, Starband says it has added 2,400 dealers to its sales channel, although at least one of those dealers, Tommy of Tennessee, is probably not someone Starband will be quoting widely.

"We consistently deliver reliable services and innovative products that attract distributors to our Dealer Direct channel and encourage world-class partners to defect to StarBand from other satellite Internet providers," said Howard Lossing, Vice President of Sales and Marketing stated.
