NetZero and Juno tried to make it as free Internet providers but the implosion of Internet advertising put a quick end to that. They then struggled along, trying to provide cheap Internet service. Now they're merged (see story)into something called United Online and are struggling along trying to provide not-quite-so-cheap Internet service under both brand names. Along the way, a few customers have gotten burned. See below.
Judith of Idaho Falls, ID October 24, 2008
Judith of Idaho Falls ID (10/24/08) NetZero is charging a user fee to three of my credit cards. I was able to cancel one of them. However NetZero/Juno is charging my MC and Discover account. The Discover charges are fraud as I never gave them my account information. I am unable to cancel the charges on my MC and Discover because I can never talk to a person.
My discover account was canceled because of the fraud activity. I was able to open a new account after one month. My MC is still being charged. I want this netzero/juno accounts closed immediately.
Alexis of Clarkson, KY October 23, 2008
Alexis of Clarkson KY (10/23/08) I had netzero internet service for a little over a month last year. They did not offer a local access number in my area, so in order to use their service, I had to have long distance added to my phone. After my first phone bill, I realized it would be cheaper to go with the local ISP. I called to cancel my netzero account and an operator offered me one free month of tech support. I DECLINED and requested to have the service turned off. That was in December 2007.
Today we got a letter from the bank about being overdrawn. We had noticed that our money was short every month , but had no idea why! They have been taking 14.95 out of our account since december of '07 WITHOUT PERMISSION! I called to day and talked to the head supervisor, who told me he could give us 25.00. I guess so JERRY! Being that we have paid [them] 250.00 counting our over draft fees. The best part of all, is that we have not received a bill from them in almost a year and we moved! so I asked Jerry, If I knowingly had your srvice, wouldnt I have called when we moved? Jerry had no answer. I want my money!
we have 3 small children, they are taking away from them. Its morally and ethically wrong, that they get away with this! Why cant someone stop them?
Jessica of Tarzana, CA October 13, 2008
Jessica of Tarzana CA (10/13/08) I have signed up with Netzero last February one year contract. We have to move out of our apartment because we cannot afford it any longer and we still want their service to be transferred to our new address. They claim that this situation would be an early disconnetion, that they cannot tranfer the service to our new address.
When we bought the service sales person never told us that verbally otherwise we would have not signed up with them. They said they will have to charge us 150.00 termination fee. We should not have to pay this fee.
Jody of Columbia, PA October 10, 2008
Jody of Columbia PA (10/10/08) After I cancelled my dial up account, which you HAVE to do by phone, I noticed they were still charging me 4.95 a month for something called backup services?? I never even heard of backup services before and I certainly never accepted it. I had to call again and raise hell to get my bank account credited. It remains to be seen if that will happen. NEVER AGAIN!
Alyssa of Little Rock, AR October 9, 2008
Alyssa of Little Rock AR (10/09/08) I called in Feb 2008 and cancelled my account with Netzero. I spoke with a man that tried offering me 1 month and then 2 months service free. I told him I was not happy with his company and cancel my account. I thought it was closed until I got a letter from them saying I have been turn over to the UNL collection division for 14.90.
I called 10/8/08 @ 6pm and spoke with a Customer Service Rep. She couldn't help me I ask to speak with her supervisor Peter. He said they had no record of me ever called and my account was still open. I couldn't believe it so I try logging on sure enough it was still active. So let say I didn't cancel my monthly charge which is 9.95 since Feb 2008. That is 10 mths @ 9.95 per month = 99.50 balance due. But I rec'd a letter for 14.90. I noticed when I check to see if I could still get into Netzero 10-08-08, by the way is when I rec'd the collection letter. That NetZero has since email notices showing I need to paid as of end of July 2008 it said I owe 29.95.
So now which is it? Do I owe you 14.90 or 29.95 or 99.50? If I didn't cancel my account how come they didn't bill me for all the months they show it is still open. What a awful company to deal with. After I cancelled the account I was still recieving monthly charges on my American Express. I called American Express and told them I cancel the account. American Express credit my account fo Feb & March 2008. I told American Express to block Netzero. I didn't authorize the charges. After that I didn't see anymore charges.
I suffer with migraines after being on the phone with Peter at Netzero. I had to take heavy medication to keep from getting a migrain. He told me there was nothing he could do. I would have to call the phone # on the collection letter. Which is a recorded message. You can't talk to anyone. I told Peter I can't believe you can't take the 14.90 off. He said it was out of his hands. What kind of Mickey Mouse operation are they running?
