Arman of Oakland, CA November 17, 2009

My wife told me about some service on a website called AIM that sounded unusal. I can't even remember why or what, but went to the computer and searched for it. When we hit it, I saw that it was AOL. I knew enough about their history to know they had nothing valuable to offer and clicked away from their web page. The next time I turned on the computer and clicked Explorer, AOL pops up as my Home Page. I tried and tried to get rid of it.

One day I went over every cookie on my computer at least 3 or 4 times making sure that absolutely every cookie from AOL was deleted. It was like an infestation! It mattered not, their Page persisted. I tried everything I could think of and still it persisted. I wrote a nasty email to them about it and got back a reply from aolcomfeedback3@aol.com that said all I had to do was go to "Tools" and follow the "intuitively" easy instructions. That was a lie. I pulled every stop and whistle in tools, barring its site from appearing on my screen, barring its cookies, you name it, and over and over it was useless. That same inane special ed version of USA today still pops up. I traced it finally to the point of realizing that it was not on the harddrive. They hide a shortcut in the favorites part of the toolbar that redirects search to retrieve the AOL home page when Explorer is clicked on. In trying to get rid of it I stumbled on to the HTL Instructions...I could not delete them.

They said to replace my google home page with AOL. Oh yes, I have repeatedly instructed my computer to have only one home page it was to be Yahoo, no that route doesn't work either. Its my computer and I want the damn thing off there. Its worse than being hacked. Why would anyone think that turning their service into a virtual Uncle Reemuss(?)tar baby is a way to win customers and influence people. Its maddness. AOL is nothing more than a legal infection and you must do something about it.

This morning I tried to rtrieve my email from aol. There was a new hoop for me to jumpthrough. I had to fill out a form to re-up my free service. I completed it and at the bottom they had the security feature where you have to type the letters you see in a box and submit the form. I did--seven times and get the same message. If I need help, for a "small" fee I can have contact with a person. Othersie there si not place to write to find out what is happening. This happened literally overnight. Last night I could get mail, today I cannot. there was not warning. I have 947 messages on there, many of which are very important and I cannot access them to tranfer them or print them or do naything with them. I sent an e-mail to the head, but I do nto feel that will ehlp at all. I do not know which Federal agency oversees AOL and I am angry and frustrated. Is there anything I can do short of paying their ransom? Please help!!!

Someone used my email to log into facebook. Now i can't use my own personalized email to start my own account. I hope they haven't used my email for any thing else. Punitive damages of stress and anxiety. I know longer feel that my identity is safe or secure. Every body told me not to use aol becouse they were slow but I insisted that [they] had the best and fastest service.

American on Line (AOL) will not allow a user to delete their master screen name. AOL's refusal to delete an account allows them to mislead any advertiser or business partner. If AOL never deletes screen names (email addresses) then they could essentially command advertising dollars based on millions of NON-users--I no longer use AOL but they use my old screen name.

Waited on support chat for over an hour never did get a response to my question. This is exactly why I will never recommend, or support the use of AOL to any of my customers. In my 35 years in the computer business I have never seen a bigger or stranger acceptance of a product by individuals who use this piece of bug ridden, advertisement laden, and unnecessary sorry excuse for software. Anyone who would pay good money, especially during this economic crisis, for this outdated excuse for software should be denied the privilege of using a computer. It is no wonder you are losing market share. So much for your chat!

I cannot get aol to work with mcaffee. Every time I try logging on aol hangs. No other program on my system does this and I cannot find any help to solve this. It is vital to me to have access to AOL since some of my more urgent issues are through them.

paul of dallas, TX June 24, 2009

I received an e mail from the office of the President of the United States totally unsolicited. I never authorized AOL to release my e mail to anyone including the President of the U.S.

We switched from a paid account (that we had for many hears) to a free account but now can't access our email! We have been getting messages for over a week on all the email addresses that says we can't access due to "temporary maintenance" undefined. We have sent emails to no avail and you can't reach a live person when you call their customer service number.

This seems like advertising fraud to me. How can "temporary' maintenance go on for over a week?

anne of sloatsburg, NY May 31, 2009

Someone has stolen by aol screen name and is sending out inappropriate email to people. I cannot get in touch with anyone from AOL to find out how to stop this

Martha of Carbondale, IL May 3, 2009

I have been faithful to AOL for more than twenty years. but now I am seriously annoyed by one thing: The screen I write messages on offers me less than three perpendicular inches to write on! I don't recall having been annoyed by the cramped space until now, but I AM annoyed. However: I have a new computer, and it may have caused the problem; If so, tell me what to do to get more up-and-down space.
